Navigating autism therapy insurance coverage can feel overwhelming.
At Autism From The Start, we believe that every child deserves access to high-quality, evidence-based care. Our team works directly with your provider to verify coverage, manage authorizations, and handle billing, allowing you to focus on your child’s developmental milestones.
Which Insurance Does Autism From The Start Accept?
Autism From The Start accepts a wide range of insurances that offer coverage for autism therapy and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services. This includes major commercial insurance plans, Kansas Medicaid (KanCare) programs, and select third-party administrators that support autism services.
Below is a list of insurance providers we commonly work with:
Commercial Plans: Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Evernorth, United HealthCare, and Optum.
Kansas Medicaid (KanCare): Kansas Medicaid, Healthy Blue, Sunflower Health Plan, and United HealthCare Community Plan (Medicaid).
Specialized & Third-Party Administrators: Ambetter, Luminare, Gravie, HealthEZ, Sisco, and CHAMP VA.
If your specific plan is not listed, please reach out to our intake department. We frequently negotiate Single Case Agreements (SCAs) to ensure continuity of care for families with out-of-network benefits.
How the process works
Our goal is to make the transition into therapy as seamless as possible. We follow a structured process to ensure your benefits are maximized and your out-of-pocket costs are transparent.
1. Benefit Verification The process begins when you provide your insurance information during intake. Our billing team performs a Verification of Benefits (VOB) to determine your coverage levels for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other developmental services. We will provide you with a detailed summary of your deductible, co-insurance, or co-payment responsibilities before services commence.
2. Clinical Documentation Review Most payors, including Kansas Medicaid and major commercial carriers, require a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from a qualified healthcare professional (such as a Developmental Pediatrician, Neurologist, or Licensed Psychologist). We collect this documentation to ensure it meets the specific criteria required by your insurance provider.
3. Initial Assessment and Authorization Once benefits are verified, we request an "Assessment Authorization." This allows our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to conduct a comprehensive initial evaluation of your child. Following the assessment, we develop a personalized treatment plan and submit a "Prior Authorization" request to your insurance company. This request advocates for the specific number of therapy hours deemed medically necessary for your child’s progress.
4. Ongoing Claims and Advocacy Once therapy begins, our office handles all claims submission and follow-up for networks with whom we participate. We manage the re-authorization process every six months (or as required by your payor) by submitting updated progress reports to ensure uninterrupted care. If a claim is denied or additional clinical information is requested, our team manages the appeals process directly with the payor.
5. Coordination for CHAMP VA and Specialized Plans For families utilizing CHAMP VA or third-party administrators like Gravie or HealthEZ, we provide additional support to ensure all unique filing requirements are met. We understand the specific documentation standards these payors require and work diligently to maintain compliance with their regulations.
